Sweaters

This is the Baby Boy 5-hour Sweater, but made for a baby girl!

I think it’s plenty girly.

This probably works out to about a 3 to 6-month size using the needles and yarn I used. Maybe even up to a year, depending on the baby!

It also didn’t take me 5 hours. It probably took 8 or 9 total.

Details:
Started: July 7; Finished: September 9, 2009
Pattern: Madli’s Shawl by Nancy Bush, Interweave Knits Summer 2004
Yarn: Valley Yarns 2/8 Merino Cashmere, unknown amount (most of what was left from the DNA scarf)
Needles: Brittany Birch 14″ straights, size US 5

Here she is on the lamp so you can see the detail:

This was really my first “process” project. I did so horribly on my first Madli’s Shawl way back when…it was my first lace project, and my first time using charts. It was full of mistakes. And I used black alpaca. Just a bad combination all around! I always liked how snuggly the photo looked, in a grayish yarn. I’ve always wanted to reknit Madli’s Shawl, in a gray or beige yarn…just to do it right. Since I’ve been taking a break from knitting (seriously, my last FO was in February!) I didn’t have anything to enter in the fair this year. So I decided it was time to knit Madli’s again, just for a fair entry.

She won second place. My first loss at the fair! But it’s OK, I’m just fine with losing to the winner (an adorable set of teensy finger puppets. Had to be knit on 000s or 0000s, and they were beaded too!).

I also entered Emily’s stripey sweater. It won an honorable mention.

So both of my entries won ribbons. Just no blue this year! I still haven’t ever won a third place ribbon. Maybe that’s what I’ll set my sights on for next year. ;)

Stripes!

by Natalie on 9/30/2008

in Kids

Emily has been asking for a sweater for over a year now. I had been busy with other projects, and was also waiting for her to slow down in the growing department. :)

It was finally time! She picked out all of the colors, and the order that they appeared.

I finished this during the power outage.

Details:
Started: August 31, Finished: September 20, 2008
Pattern: Drop Shoulder Sweater – Child, from the Knitter’s Handy Book of Sweater Patterns
Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton-Ease (5 colors); about 1/2 ball of each
Needles: US7 Denise Interchangeables

Maybe someday I’ll take better photos in daylight. :)

Basil

by Natalie on 5/1/2008

in Crafting, Knitting

My first sweater (for me!) is finished!

And it fits!

Details:
Started: March 26, Finished: April 30, 2008
Pattern: Basil, by Kim Hargreaves, in Rowan Summer Tweed Collection
Yarn: Rowan Summer Tweed, color 502
Needles: US8 and US9, Denise Interchangeables
Size: XL (or whatever the largest size was available)
Modifications: Added length (3-4 inches) to the bottom after finishing. I expected I would need to add some length, but figured it’d be pretty easy to add on exactly as much as I needed after it was finished. I probably added a bit too much, but slightly too long is better than too short!

The pattern called for 10 skeins of yarn. When I had finished knitting it according to the pattern, I had used less than 8! After adding the extra length, I had used up about 8.75 skeins. Crazy. I never use LESS than a pattern calls for!

I still need to wash it again. The yarn STINKS. I’m holding out hope that a good washing will fix that, and it will probably also pull up in length as well.

Kimberly had asked about the neckline. It is pretty low. But I’m going to be wearing it with a t-shirt underneath so it’s not an issue. If I were to ever knit this again, I’d probably change the neckline so it’s higher. I didn’t want to mess with the pattern on my first try this time!

Sad sock, the resolution

Crown Mountain Farms is sending me 2 new skeins of yarn. Since they don’t have the same colorways anymore, I chose the closest they had (Wild Horses).

I think I may give my other 2 skeins of Wild Thing and then the Wild Horses a vinegar bath just to be sure! Then be extra extra gentle in any washing.

Hopefully it was just a fluke batch of yarn, and the other skeins don’t bleed so much!

In other news, I’m ALMOST done with my Basil sweater! Just one side seam remains to be sewn, then a little reinforcement of the back neckline.

Ripped

And it feels SOOOOOOOOOOO good!

I started this baby sweater for Kevin’s cousin thinking that the shower would be held some time in September, after Grace comes home from Guatemala. So it was a causal thing. Knit a little here, a little there. No pressure. If my hands started to hurt or I got [...]

Sometimes projects go so fast…

by Natalie February 28, 2007 Crafting

…they’re done before they ever are mentioned on the blog.

Well, not totally done. Still needs a real blocking. And buttons. We don’t have any button shops here in Cincinnati that I know of (if someone knows of one, PLEASE tell me where it is!). I’m probably going to do some web-shopping to see what [...]
