Behold, the no-longer-a-UFO, the FINISHED rug!
(Okay, it’s not completely finished, I haven’t bought the backing yet, but the knitting is ALL DONE.)
I love it. It blends nicely with our sagey-green walls and the beige of the carpet. The creams & yellows pull out some of the colors in the living room couch.
I think I may wash it before I sew the backing on, that way it can shrink if it’s going to, and then the backing won’t be too loose.
See? I really have been working on it!
Now comes the important task of figuring out the colors of that last square.
Rule #1: No ecru in the top corner, since the other left-hand squares have that.
Rule #1: Spread out the brown more, since the other left-hand squares are heavy on brown.
Rule #3: No blue or dark green, since the bottom row doesn’t have either of those colors.
Rule #4: Any cream or yellow should go towards the middle of the square, to balance out the surrounding squares.
I think I’ll go with a pattern somewhat like the second square from the left on the bottom row, but starting with the light green.
Then will come the challenge of what color to do the border. I want to use the light green, but I don’t know if I have enough. I will have to check and see if I have a spare ball hiding in the drawer.
My online knitting group, In Stitches, usually has a theme for a challenge each month. For June, we were going to do “June Bugs” again, but enthusiasm fizzled after a week or so. So we changed it.
Now the challenge is “The Lurker Projects.” We are to finish a project that is just hanging around.
You know what that means.
Oh yeah, I’m going to finish that damn rug!
If you notice my new project list in the sidebar over there ————–>
you will see that my rug is now at 75% complete. I have only 3 squares to go! It takes me about 2 nights for each square, so that means I should only need 6 days to finish them.
After that, I plan to add an applied I-cord border (because my edges are dreadfully uneven), and then sew some of that puffy non-slip stuff on the back.
Ann, also an In Stitches member, has started a Mitered Square Rug herself. She hasn’t graced us with a photo of it yet. Care to share, Ann?
So, the gloves are done! They weren’t quite dry yet, after their bath on Tuesday, last night.
Yesterday, I found some extra knitting time at work, and finished off the second ball of Highland Wool on the French Market bag.
This bag really eats yarn, and time. I swear I keep knitting & knitting & knitting, but I’m not getting anywhere! I’m slightly over 5 inches up the sides now. I may knit the sides a little longer than the 8″ the pattern calls for, but I will have to see how much yarn I have left when I get there. Sara said the Highland Wool shrunk a little more vertically than she expected on the last bag she made.
But all of the French Market knitting I did yesterday got to be a bit much. I was burnt out on it last night. With the gloves finished, I wasn’t sure what to work on instead. Kevin’s sock? Nah, I need to adjust the pattern a bit and I’m not in the mood for taking notes and doing math. My second practice sock? Nah, I’d have to take the needles out of Kevin’s sock. Lichen or Fletcher? Nah, I won’t be wearing them for a long time, so why worry about them now? That left one thing.
The rug.
Yes, I dug out the rug. Can you believe that? I started on the 8th square. It was actually kind of fun! Maybe I will finish it this summer after all!
Stash update: -.5 ball of Esprit, -1 ball of Highland Wool; 239 in stash
Just cut off a square!
I finished up the 6th square on the rug last night, and then Kevin & I laid it out to check the sizing. It was clear that 5 squares by 3 squares was going to be too long to fit in our entryway.
So I cut off square #5!
So I went from being 40% done (6 of 15) to 42% done (5 of 12).
I did start the next square (square #7 of the pattern, but square #6 on my rug now). I’ll take a new photo once I finish this next square.

I also decided to wash the DNA scarf again and use some conditioner in the rinse water this time. I think that will make it sufficiently soft. Only thing is that now the ends stretched even wider with this wash. I couldn’t smoosh (yes, that is the technical term) them back as even as I did with the first wash. Oh well, what can you do? So fibermom, my ends are now just as frilly as yours.
PS what is your first name anyway? I feel weird referring to you only as “fibermom.” :)
