Easter Egg Yarn, part 2

Last night Emily wound up her Easter Egg Yarn.

It looks more pastel-ish when wound up! And very pretty.

Clearly we need to work on her winding skills

Who knew?

Easter Egg Yarn

by Natalie on 3/25/2008

in Kids

We dyed some eggs on Saturday. And of course we couldn’t let the leftover dye go to waste!

So I let Emily dye some sock yarn.

(If you look closely, in the background, you can see Kevin on the edge of his seat while watching the Xavier game)

First we started off with an eyedropper. It was successful at not making a mess, but was clearly going to take FOREVER to get the dye all on. So then Mom and I helped her out with some squirt bottles (she told us exactly where to put the dye on the yarn).

When we ran out of white spots to put the dye, Emily decided that squirting the purple all over the yarn was the best way to go. It muddied the colors some, but it’s her yarn! It’s still pretty bright.

The back side of it didn’t get as much dye soaking through, so there are still some white spots. It will be really fun to see how this knits up!

It was still damp on Sunday, and I didn’t think to check it last night when I got home from Lambikin’s Hideaway. But I’ll take a final photo tonight.

Then I’ll give it a washing with some shampoo. It really smells like vinegar still, even with all the rinsing!

A Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday to me! And happy last day of NaBloPoMo!

Today my coworker, Tiffany, and I celebrated by stinking up the office kitchen with the smells of wet wool, vinegar, and fermented pokeweed berry ink.

First I dug around the cabinets and found a great glass bowl to soak the yarn in! I soaked it in vinegar & water for almost an hour.

Then we mixed Tiffany’s ink with some of the vinegar water

and we added the yarn.

Then we smushed it around until it was all covered with the dye.

Time for the yarn burrito!

We put it in the microwave, and nuked it for 30 seconds at a time at 50% power. The yarn never really appeared to be soaking up any more of the dye, so after a few minutes, I decided it had all it was going to take.

We let it cool, then rinsed it out. We thought it might bleed for awhile, but just a few rinsings, and the water was running clear.

I hung it up on my desk in front of my little space heater to dry all day. It wasn’t completely dry by 5 PM, but mostly!

This photo is pretty close to the actual color.
