Fair Results

I entered 4 items in this year’s Harvest Home Fair.

The Crosshatch socks didn’t win anything.

The Bevel socks won an honorable mention.

The Alphabet Blanket won second prize.

And finally, the Sanquhar Gloves won first prize…AND Best of Show!

The Best of Show award is given across all of the needlework categories (Crochet, Knitting, Embroidery, Needlepoint, Quilts, Machine sewing, Dolls, and Miscellaneous). Usually it’s a quilt that wins the Best of Show, so I didn’t even think there was any chance for that! What a surprise!

The lady who appears to be in charge of the needlework part of the exhibits came over to talk to me when I picked up my things. She told me I have no competition, my work is always so nice (I guess in the 4 years I’ve been entering, they’ve remembered my name now!). Basically, that I’m just competing against myself when I enter multiple items.

I also asked about why they don’t have more categories. She said that they used to, but it got so that there were so few entries in each category, that they were just paying out money to everyone, and they just couldn’t afford it anymore. So, now there’s just the 2 categories for knitting (baby garment or blanket, and then anything else).

So, I finally broke the “lace” trend. Colorwork beats lace.

Update, blog, update!

1. New sock pattern: Pattern is written, and being test-knit. Had some issues with the instep pattern, but hopefully it’s correct now. Test knitters will confirm soon I hope! Knit, girls, knit!

2. New socks: My pair is done. Need to take photos. LOVE love love the color. They make me so happy. Wishing I had a sock model handy. Emily’s feet need to grow so I can use her. :) Grow, feet, grow!

3. Sock blockers: Got a set from Fearless Fibers, as recommended by Dave. Just waiting on the shipment to arrive! Faster, mail, faster!

4. Ravelry: I got one of the hotly-demanded tote bags. NYAH! Also ordered the Frogged & Ripped Pint glasses, and a button pack. Again, faster, mail, faster!

5. Next project: I’m crocheting! I’m making a ripple blanket, using This pattern. I’m about halfway through the second row and have realized I’m doing it wrong. I’ve picked up stitches through only one of the loops, instead of both of them. But it’s not that bad that I’m going to rip it out. I’ll just do it right from the next row on! I’m using up my mass quantities of Lion Brand Cotton-Ease. Should be a very colorful blanket. Crochet, Natalie, crochet!

6. UFOlympics: I think I’m going to cut off joining on Friday of this week. There’s already so many people (which I think is great!), too many more and it’ll be too hard to keep track of things. I really want to create a spreadsheet/scorecard of some sort to track who finishes their events. Type, Natalie, type!

7. Sold 20 skeins of the Lana d’Oro yarn. Shrink, stash, shrink!

A to Z

All done! The baby is not yet. He’s still cooking for another day or so. :)

I’ve wrapped and brought the blanket to work with me, so whenever we get the call that he’s here, we can go visit on our lunch hour (the girls won’t be able to go to the hospital, so we will have to visit during the day – they’ll have to wait until he’s at home to see him).

Details:
Started: November 1, 2007, Finished: February 27, 2008
Pattern: Alphabet Blanket by Debbie Bliss, from the baby knits book
Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton-Ease; 5 skeins Vanilla, less than 1/2 skein Ice Blue (discontinued colors)
Needles: US5 Denise Interchangeables
Modifications: Ignored gauge, skipped border pattern.

ABC

Last row! And just in time. Stacie went to the doctor last week and they scheduled an ultrasound for this week to see how big the baby is. They think he may be getting pretty big, and if so, then they’ll induce her later this week.

Of course, we all thought Sam was going to be pretty big, but she was a teensie 6 pounds, 9 ounces! And she’s still a little peanut.

Since the clock is ticking, I decided to just do an applied I-cord edging. And since I’m out of white yarn (my 5 skeins was JUST enough to finish the letters), I picked a light blue. I’m liking the color contrast.

This post is a long time in the making! I had this row finished before all of the previous row’s posts were posted. But then I got sick with the flu starting on 2/13, and was down for the count until 2/18. I didn’t knit again until 2/20.

One more row to go!

I lost two stitch markers above the K. I have no idea where one of them went. The other I have, I just keep forgetting to put it back on.

Another row of letters is done! 2 more to go.

Yes, I’m going to milk this for a week’s worth of posts. :)
I can’t wait to wash and block the blanket and see how it looks with the letters all straight.
