Happy Birthday Mom!

by Natalie on 1/22/2007

in Crafting, Knitting

A little early, but we celebrated between hers & dad’s this year.

I finished these Saturday morning. Washed in the sink, then tossed in Mom’s dryer to dry (that’s why they’re a little wrinkly).

Details–
Started: 1/7/07, Finished: 1/20/07
Pattern: Jaywalker, by Grumperina.
Yarn: Regia
Needles: 5″ US1 Brittany Birch DPNs
Modifications: I did a short-row heel instead of the flap heel called for in the pattern. And I figured out the easiest way to avoid the holes when you finish the heel. Maybe on my next sock I’ll take photos and show it.

4 days to go

by Natalie on 1/15/2007

in Crafting, Knitting

We’re going to my parents’ on Friday, straight after work, so that means I lose a knitting day before I need to have mom’s socks done.

Here’s where we are so far:

One down, and half a leg on #2. I think it is possible to have these done Thursday night. But we’ll see. If not, Mom won’t care if I’m finishing up her socks while we’re there on Friday & Saturday! In fact, I can see her wanting to watch me finish the toe to see how it’s done.

I think I will take a trip over to Hobby Lobby tonight to see if they have the new Cotton-Ease in stock. I want to start some Ice Cream sweaters! I’ll be knitting them extra big, since by the time they are finished, it will likely not be cold enough for the girls to wear them. And while Emily may be in nearly the same size next Fall, Sam will definitely not! So hers definitely needs to be upsized.

Note to self: put a title here

by Natalie on 1/11/2007

(After receiving a few comments, I realized I didn’t ever put a title on this post! So I added the current one. :) )

When you don’t get around to taking photos for a few days, and thus don’t get around to blogging for a few days, by the time you do, you can almost have a finished sock!

It helps when it’s a fast pattern to knit.

For my 2nd pair of Jaywalkers, I’ve decided to do a short-row heel. It’s a big heel, since the pattern is over 76 stitches, (so the heel is over 38 instead of the usual 30ish). But it works. Mom has high arches too, so it should fit her ok. Plus it’ll make it that much easier to get the socks on, since Jaywalkers are notoriously stiff.

The yarn is Regia that Minnie sent me in the first KR secret pal swap. So it’s been sitting in the stash for a long time! Mom claimed this yarn shortly after I received it. She has some sweaters and shirts in these pumpkiny colors.

I will hopefully have this pair done before the 20th. We’re going to Indy that weekend to celebrate Dad’s (15th) and Mom’s (29th) birthdays. That’s a sock a week, and I’m well on my way to meeting that goal.

When these are done, I think I might do a little batch of dishcloth/bib knitting. Sam is just a drool-factory these days (we go through at least 10 bibs a day), and the one knit bib I made her seems to keep her the driest! And I need to finish the state dishcloths for my mom & dad.

200Sox. 1

by Natalie on 1/30/2006

Pair #1 completed in 2006:

Mom’s “New England” Socks (modeled by me…they fit me so well, don’t they? She may have to pry them off my feet).

Started: 9/18, Finished: 1/26
Pattern: New England from Knitting on the Road by Nancy Bush
Yarn: Knitpicks Color-your-own Merino sock yarn, dyed with Kool-aid by my mom
Needles: 5″ size 1 Brittany DPNs
Modifications: I didn’t like the toe used in the pattern, so I used the one from the Go With The Flow socks (becoming the toe of choice around here).
Anything I’d do different?: I might use a different heel. This one feels a little odd, with the narrow slip-stitch part going under the heel, but you get used to it after a few minutes. It does fit my narrow heels well though. Mom has narrow feet too, so this should fit her as well.

“Camping” Update:
Mom was amused that I shared their “camping” pictures & stories with all of you. She immediately asked “did anyone comment???” Oh, and we figured out which lights she found, they are these. Of course, while looking at the website, she found some others she wants too. So we’re going to place an order together…I’ve got my eyes on the turkeys and the leaves (I already have the Indian Corn ones, and my mom has the leaves, they are very pretty in person).

Birthday Socks

by Natalie on 1/27/2006

in Crafting, Knitting

I finished Mom’s Birthday Socks last night. She won’t get them until I go to visit them on February 9th, on my way to Madalyn’s. In fact, Mom won’t even be home on her birthday, she and Dad are “camping” in Florida right now.

Yes, that’s “camping” in quotes. Why? See for yourself:

Click on the photo for full-size images

Notice the satellite dish. And if you look at the side of the camper, where the table and chairs are, yes, that is a TV built into the side of the camper (there are 2 more inside…one in the bedroom, and one in the “living room” area). That was Dad’s new addition last summer. He got tired of carrying the TV from inside out to the table, and back in at night. So he cut a hole in the side of the trailer, stuck in a TV, and finished it off with a locking door.

Now, if you look at photo #2, you will see the new parrot party lights, along the awning. Party lights are a very important part of “camping.” You must have special lights wherever you go. Every holiday/season/special location needs it’s own set of lights. The theme for Florida “camping” is tropical parrots. Photo #4 also displays the new, special tropical-themed flag (We’ll ignore the fact that it’s about 60 degrees max where they are in FL right now. ;) ) I have been informed today that the camper shop they went to the other day had “the cutest and most original flower lights I have ever seen” and that they were $25 for a 12-foot strand (it would take 2 to span across the whole awning, and we just CANNOT have lights that don’t reach from end to end, now can we?), and I am to search online to see if I can find them cheaper somewhere else. If not, they will be purchased. Yes, $50 for flower lights to be used MAYBE once a year.

See, this “camping” is a serious thing!

But check out picture #3. They have lakefront property!

(I wish they’d sent a photo of Zack, their dog, doing his “camping.”)

Birthday Hat

by Natalie February 24, 2005 Crafting

Not the paper, pointy kind.
This is for my brother, who vetoed socks, and asked for a hat instead. Admire the multiple options for wear!

The gray Alpaca yarn is softer than the black, and also fuzzier. It shed quite a bit! It’ll be interesting to see how the other colors (I have [...]

Back to our regularly scheduled knitting

by Natalie December 20, 2004 Crafting

All of my Xmas presents are finished now. I finished up the I-cord handle for the Booga bag on Saturday evening. I tossed the bag in the wash last night, but i’m sure it has 3-4 more washes ahead of it before it’s felted enough–I used the same yarn as I did the [...]
