A lot of the free patterns they offer make me go “why?” But every now and then they have one that is so cute!
I wonder if I have enough Cascade 220 in coordinating colors to make this….

Finally finished!

Project Details:
Started: 8/11/06, Finished: 10/2/06
Pattern: Felted Mitered Square Bag
Yarn: Noro Kureyon, 128
Needles: US 10 Denise Interchangeables
Modifications: Crocheted edge border, shaved it all over w/ sweater shaver (the Kureyon gets fuzzy!), some shaping (described below)
When I did the crochet border on the top edge of this bag, I did it loosely…I wanted to make sure it’d felt OK. Well, it was too loose! So the top edge flared out–not the look I was going for (it could have been OK, I just really wanted a rectangular/sqare bag).
So I tucked in the 4 corners and stitched them. Not perfect, but it has a much better shape than it did. There’s one square on one side that either had an extra row of stitches or just didn’t felt as well, it’s a little poofed out. But I think over time, it’ll straighten out.
I sewed in the lining over the tucks, so you can’t see them. Adding the lining really gave the bag the structure I wanted–it keeps it more rectangular. The lining is black fleece (leftovers from Emily’s Harry Potter cloak from Halloween last year). The handles are leather (I think–maybe a really nice vinyl!), and I found them at Hobby Lobby. I stitched them on with upholstery thread. I also added a strip of plastic canvas for the bottom to keep it flat.
All-in-all, it didn’t come out exactly as planned, but I love this bag! I think tonight I’ll dump everything out of my current purse and switch to this one. It’s so autumnal!
I think this pattern could be fun to do in solid-color blocks, or even random stripes with solid yarn. I’d definitely knit this one again (especially in Kureyon–but I’d be sure to make the squares not come out so matchy-matchy…it was totally accidental, next time I’d force it to not have squares matching next to each other).

I have loved this pattern for a Felted Mitered Square bag ever since I first found it, probably well over a year ago. And it calls for 5 skeins of Noro Kureyon…I had 5.5 left from the Fletcher jacket. PERFECTO!
I cast on as soon as I finished the Lacy Lattice Stole, and finished it up today.

The pre-felted measurements are 12.5″ wide by 13″ tall by 4″ deep.
I did a row of single crochet along the top to finish it off. I only used about 4 skeins of the Kureyon. Maybe the pattern calls for an extra since it calls for 2 different colorways?
Black leather handles (found at Michael’s) will finish the bag.
So far it’s been through 1 wash cycle, and is in the process of #2. I’ve never done any felting with Kureyon before. The Kureyon seems to be leaving more lint in the bag than the other yarns (mostly Cascade 220, some Elann.com Highland Wool) did. You definitely want to use a pillowcase for felting Kureyon.
I finally found a zippered pillowcase for this purpose yesterday. Kohl’s has them for about $6.00 (they’re currently on sale through tomorrow!).

I love this bag. I will definitely be using it a lot! It’s a perfect size for a purse, and it just looks too darn cute.
Thanks to Julie for the yarn!
Pattern: Based on the Booga Bag styling
Yarn: Recycled Sari Silk, from ??? (ask Julie where she got it!)
Needles: Size 8 Denise Interchangeables
Other: handles & plastic canvas purchased at Hobby Lobby, lining is satin fabric

I used a piece of plastic canvas to strengthen the bottom (I like flat-bottomed bags), and then sewed up the lining. The fabric for the lining is leftover satin from my bridesmaids/flower girls dresses from my wedding! Thank you, Mori Lee. ;) It was the perfect color and fabric to line the bag.
And I’m pretty darn proud of my lining job too. I totally winged it, and it was EXACTLY the perfect size! I think I did a pretty good job of hand-stitching it in too.
