Samantha wants to hear about the last time I went grocery shopping.
It was last Sunday. We packed up Emily and headed to the “new” Kroger. We usually go to the “old” Kroger because it’s slightly closer to our house, but we needed to get gas, and the “new” Kroger has fuel (and you get the 10-cent discount when you spend $100/month there, you know). Plus, the “new” Kroger has a much better produce department, and we were mainly shopping for fruits & vegetables, and meat.
Emily LOVES the grocery store. Especially the produce department. She’s a fruit nut. The kid would eat fruit and cheese 24/7 if we let her (she does eat well in the vegetable and meat department too, so don’t think we’re filling her up with sugar and fat!).
So following the layout of the store, you first hit the bakery/bread department, where we bought some hamburger buns for our turkey burgers that night. We grabbed some whole-wheat buns (accidentally), but what the heck, let’s try them.
Then the produce department. Emily gets excited. She wants apples. And bananas. And strawberries. And this and that and this and that. We got her some apples (Gala), some bananas, skipped the strawberries (they didn’t look that great), and some red seedless grapes (and I tell you, they are the yummiest grapes I’ve had in awhile. We usually get the green ones but I may be a red convert now!). I needed some carrots, potatoes, and green peppers. The peppers were 2 for $1, and they were HUGE! I’ve never seen peppers so big. And heavy.
Which reminds me, I need to cook those suckers soon. We’ll have to have potatoes this weekend on the grill:
- Take 2 layers of aluminum foil
- Cut up potatoes however you prefer them–Kevin likes cubes, I like slices
- Cut up onion and green peppers in as large of pieces as you like
- Layer potatoes, onions, and peppers on foil, mixing in little bits of butter or margarine (could probably use olive oil too if that’s your thing), salt and pepper (or use a seasoned salt that you like).
- Fold up foil to make a packet. Leave a little room for steam.
- Place on hot grill to cook, flipping once or twice. We place the potatoes on while the grill is still heating up, then the potatoes are done by the time our meat is done (the potatoes take a little longer than the meat does).
- Super yummy, and easy clean-up! Just toss the foil in the trash.
So, after leaving that area of the store, our cart was looking pretty darn healthy! Fruits and veggies and whole-wheat bread.
Next up was the meat department. They had pork chops buy-one-get-one, so we got a couple packs of those. Chicken breasts were on sale too, so 2 packs of those went into the cart. And some italian sausages (both hot and mild). Kevin likes to mix them because the mild is too mild and the hot is too hot for him. :) I myself love the hot (and the Kroger brand is REALLY hot! I actually like them better than the Johnsonville ones we used to get).
This is where Emily started in with this “Hey lady” thing. I don’t know what started it but she kept poking me saying “Hey lady” or something like that and would not stop. It might have been “What are you doing lady?” Anyway, it was annoying. We were in the frozen food section before she stopped.
Kevin searched for La Rosa’s hoagie patties, but they didn’t have any. Got Em a bag of peas (the girl loves her peas). And Kevin got a box of Stouffer’s French Bread Pizzas for his lunch (they’re a treat for him). I think that’s all we got in the frozen section. I should have bought some ice cream! It’ll go on the list for next time. And maybe some fudge pops. I haven’t had one of them in F O R E V E R.
The dairy section was next: 2 gallons of 1% milk, 2 bags of mozzarella cheese sticks, and a package of american cheese. Exciting!
In the snack section, Kevin grabbed a bag of potato chips (because we have a half-finished container of french onion dip in the fridge). Oh, and I had grabbed a package of Oreos earlier in the store. And I swear it was the best bag of Oreos I’ve ever had. See, I like to dunk mine…I like them to get good and soggy. Sometimes I actually eat them with a bowl of milk and a spoon so I can get them down in the milk and fish them out. Oreos can take awhile to get to the proper sogginess though. But this bag? These get soggy quick! I can dunk them for just a few seconds and they’re already properly soggy. PERFECTO! (That was for Madalyn.)
Last thing I picked up was some…feminine medication…because I was on an antibioitic for an infection (part of what landed me in the hospital thinking I was in labor last week), and any time I’m on an antibiotic, I get a different kind of infection. You know what I mean. So I was planning ahead.
Kevin grabbed a bottle of wine, but when we got to the checkout, he wasn’t allowed to buy it. It wasn’t 1 PM yet. You know, you can’t have people potentially getting drunk before 1 PM. It just wouldn’t be appropriate. You can potentially get drunk after 1 PM on a Sunday, but not a second before. Nosiree. :)
Then we packed it all up in the car, got gas, and went home.

No wine before 1pm!?! I’m screwed! *wink* Great recipe, by the way. :) Did you, by chance, buy me anything good while you were shopping? *lol*
This post was hysterical because I was wondering why you were writing about going to the market. Then I remembered your last post.
Fascinating stuff.
Can you write about laundry?
