UFOlympics, Anyone?

by Natalie on 1/16/2006

in Crafting,Knitting

Stephanie proposed a new Knit-Along today, “The Knitting Olympics.” The goal is to start and finish a challenging project within the 16 days of the Olympics. She asks that anyone who wants to join post in the comments. I posted:

I’d be in, if we could do it with a UFO. I have a pair of Sanquhar gloves that are nowhere near to being a pair. They’re maybe 1/2 a glove right now, and 16 days would definitely be a challenge for me to finish them! I’m planning on not starting any new projects until I get through a couple of the UFOs that backed up in 2005.

Maybe I’ll start the alternative “UFOlympics.” :)

And as I pressed “post,” I thought that this really is a good idea! So, anyone who wants to be in the UFOlympics, sign up in the comments!

The rules will be similar to those of “The Knitting Olympics.”

Rules:
1. No starting on your designated UFO before the opening ceremonies start.
2. Finish before the flame goes out.
3. You may choose 1 or more UFOs, depending on how much is left to do. All UFOs you intend to finish in the 16 days MUST be declared prior to the event.
4. You cannot join both the Knitting Olympics and the UFOlympics. The point of the Knitting Olympics is to start a new, challenging project. The UFOlympics is about finishing those unfinished objects laying around.

**The UFOlympics is not associated with The Knitting Olympics. They are separate events/KALs.**

So, who is in?

For a while there I thought I would do a pair of socks for Stephanie’s Knitting Olympics. Luckily I came to my senses ;-)

This, I can do. I have 2 sweaters that have been shut away for more than a year. I’ll be finishing Baltic for the UFOlympics.

2 Holly January 16, 2006 at 5:16 pm

Oh, Natalie.(insert sobbing here) Why didn’t I wait until you had posted your wonderful idea? Too late. I’m committed to a whole sweater when I could have finished one that’s been waiting around for months. I must be crazy. No, that comes in another month.
Oh, well. I’ll be following your progress-bet it’s better than mine!

3 Cynthia January 16, 2006 at 5:40 pm

This is a much better idea for me since my ufo’s are starting to stack up.
My Tina shawl http://www.fiddlesticksknitting.com/TinaDetails.html has been languishing since my eyesight went wonky (that’s a technical term for detached vitreous). I’m ready to give it another try, though! I’m through the center panel and only about 8 rows into the border so it will be a challenge to complete it in 16 days.

I am in, I think. I HAVE to finish my Princess De sweater. It can’t sit in that box any longer!

5 Heather January 16, 2006 at 8:02 pm

I’m in! I’ve been avoiding the Saranac sweater for my husband since before Christmas so I plan to finish it during the UFOlympics — maybe the pair of gloves I put to the side right after I connected the fingers too. :)

i had actually asked her if we could do quantities as well. as i do so much charity crafting, i asked if i could do a large amount for the charity of the month over at ac4c. we’ll see what she says.

What a clever idea! I’m going to to give the Knitting Olympics a shot, but I’ll keep an eye on how y’all are doing over here. Good luck!

8 Jenifer January 17, 2006 at 3:49 pm

I’m so in! I have so many UFOs to choose from … let’s see if I can narrow down the list! :)

9 Julie January 17, 2006 at 3:49 pm

I’m going to finish my Mom’s Multidirectional scarf… left over from CHRISTMAS.

10 Samantha January 17, 2006 at 3:51 pm

Sounds like a challenge, but I don’t have any UFOs that are not current WIPs. Hmmm.

11 suzanne January 17, 2006 at 5:20 pm

I’m in like Flynn!
My project will be the Leo sweater for Maurice, done is the (rather nice) chocolate brown Dale of Norway Falk.

12 Nanette January 17, 2006 at 6:38 pm

Definitely work on your Sanquhar gloves! Mine are my favorite knitted item – I wear them a lot. I did them in black and white and they kind of glow in the dark when I’m outside at night. :)

13 Tara January 17, 2006 at 8:07 pm

I would joing…but I don’t have any longterm UFOs (I’m big into finishinr or ripping) except one shawl that I’m saving for summer knitting (it’s too light weight to wear in the winter and I’m trying to stock up on sweaters). I think it’s a great idea!

14 minnie January 17, 2006 at 10:21 pm

oooooooooo, tina! i actually thought about that one, before i picked peacock feathers. i think i’ll do tina AFTER the wedding

15 minnie January 17, 2006 at 10:21 pm

oh, and stephanie said yes, so i’m making 15 12″ squares

16 Mary in Virginia January 18, 2006 at 10:13 am

Oh, I’d like in. I’d like to finish my top-down raglan that’s just to the underarm point (maybe). This would even mean some use this winter!

And if I’d just posted last week this would have counted for delurking!

17 Becky January 18, 2006 at 12:48 pm

This is good incentive–and a much cozier group. I am, er, was knitting Picovoli with the Sexy Knitter’s Group. It is on the back burner and the fire is about to go out! I will finish that puppy for the UFOlympics. :) I really want to wear it! That is a huge challenge for me besides, since I have only made one funky sweater before. Thanks for the option, Natalie!

18 Susan January 18, 2006 at 3:13 pm

This one’s a great idea, too. I’ve already signed myself up for a beaded scarf for the knitting olympics, but am committed to finishing a pair of UFO socks before doing the scarf (and since those are now zooming along with the renewed focus, perhaps a UFO sweater as well). So perhaps these pre-olympic UFO efforts can be considered something like the running of the torch before the games begin? :-)

19 Erica January 18, 2006 at 4:41 pm

I’ll be frogging a sweater where the front and back are completely knit. Who knew you have to measure gauge on knitted lace AFTER blocking? Live and learn. It’s currently big enough for me and my 5’10″ daughter to wear at the same time! Not the look I’m going for. Love the UFOlympics.

20 Madalyn January 18, 2006 at 5:03 pm

Omg, I’m TOTALLY in. My husband’s scarf is dying for some attention!

21 maria January 18, 2006 at 8:46 pm

yes! this one i am in for!
(and i’m delurking too, albeit delayed)
i don’t need any help in casting on new projects, i need help in *finishing* them!

so i will finish:
my pink carnival shawl
and that one purple armwarmer
ugh, i’m dreading them already ;-)

22 Eklectika January 19, 2006 at 1:17 am

Now this idea, I like…and I have plenty of UFOs to consider, lol…

23 NessieNoodle January 19, 2006 at 3:36 pm

Count me in- I am stalled on my Mrs. B’s and need to get the second one finished-
If I do that I will finish my second sock-yippee. It has to be in that order or I won’t get the B’s done.

Love the idea~

24 Linda January 20, 2006 at 12:21 pm

Just what I need to get a couple of my UFOs finished! I’m selecting the Beaded Shapely Shawlette and a half finished tea cosy. Thanks for hosting this kal.

25 Noelle January 20, 2006 at 12:34 pm

Yaay! An Olympic KAL for my unfinished clappy! Please add me to the list!

26 Jeri January 20, 2006 at 5:41 pm

I can do this. I need to do this. My “leafraking” sweater needs a push. Can I take those double points out of a sleeve and check out the roll factor before the olympics? When is the olympics anyway?

Jeri

27 Kyrthira January 21, 2006 at 12:38 am

I think I’ll join in, too! I’ve got a sleeveless shirt that I need to sew together, among other things…

28 Elizabeth January 22, 2006 at 10:56 am

I’m in for my first knit-along. My project is the To Dye For sweater from the Stitch ‘n Bitch Handbook. I haven’t even started the sleeves, and it’s been on needles for about a year.

29 abby January 22, 2006 at 10:52 pm

so perfect.
i have WAY more UFO’s than i’m willing to discuss publically…however, i think i can manage (drumroll please) – the market squares bag.

*winces at re-learning entrelac*

30 Mama-E January 23, 2006 at 8:52 am

I posted to Steph that I would finish 2 UFO’s. A blanket and a poncho. I’m in!

31 Rob January 24, 2006 at 1:06 pm

Count me in on Team UFOlympics!

32 Scotty January 24, 2006 at 9:04 pm

Yes, I will do it! I have 2 crocheted items. One is a PIA that’s over 10 years old: a lavender baby sweater. The other is a shell-stitch baby blanket. I commit to finishing these 2 items during your event!

33 Sheryl January 24, 2006 at 9:36 pm

Count me in. Oh, this will be good for me… I’ve got a test shrug I’m supposed to be finishing for sylvie at chezplum.com. Need to get some motivation!!!

34 MsLisa January 27, 2006 at 8:31 am

I am in! A friend just told me about this challenge and I would love the motivation! I have a great 12 month old sized Debbie Bliss baby sweater languishing in my knitting basket. I have to finish it before my 9 month old gets too big for it!!!! I have the front done and 8 inches of the back, so I would just need to finish that up along with the tedious sleeves and the neck.

35 Wanda January 27, 2006 at 11:40 am

I signed up initially for the Knitting Olympics, but decided to start another project soon for a sick relative and thought that I would rather work on that and spend the time working on a sweater for my dbf, rather than another selfish knitting project for me. At least if I focus only on those two projects for 16 days, I can make a lot of progress and finish the scarf for my cousin, although the sweater probably still won’t be finished, b/c it’s a man-sized sweater, but maybe I can get the front and back done on it. I feel better about this decision already. So please count me in!

36 flajol January 28, 2006 at 7:59 am

OK – I’m in. I will be finishing a cable sweater I started a couple of years ago, that has been languishing in a basket ever since. This is just the motivation I need to finally get it off the needles! :o)

37 flajol January 28, 2006 at 8:05 am

Oh no! I just visited a later post – I already signed up with YarnHarlot to finish this UFO for the Knitting Olympics, so I can’t do it here too, can I? Scrub the cabled sweater for the UFOlympic challenge – I’ll do the second Fiesta Feet sock for here (suffering from dreaded second sock syndrome), then I can take part in both. :o)

38 Dani January 28, 2006 at 12:43 pm

OK OK I’m in. I have been fighting off joining but this is the perfect kick in the butt to finally finish my Never Ending Lap Throw. I WILL finish it now!

39 Suzanne January 29, 2006 at 3:57 pm

OK, I can add a project to join both Olympics. Waist scarf, in brown (haven’t chosen the yarn yet).

GO TEAM USA!

40 Becca January 31, 2006 at 12:10 pm

Oh yes, count me in. My designated project will be my almost-half-done beginner’s lace triangle shawl, and maybe the Ribby Cardi I started over the summer.

41 Kim January 31, 2006 at 9:35 pm

I wish to join your UFOlympics.. I need some reason to urgently finish my Ribby2 (My second Ribby Cardi) which is my first UFO ever..

I have to finish one sleeve, knit another sleeve, seam, and do the collar… and if you want to get real picky about it.. buy a zipper and install it.. lol.

42 ksenia February 2, 2006 at 3:07 pm

Count me in! I have a basket of single socks and have been unable to find a one-legged friend to gift them to.

43 Mary Carmen February 6, 2006 at 10:24 am

I’m in. I have a Dr.Who scarf that I desperately want to finish.

44 Stephanie February 6, 2006 at 4:36 pm

I’m in! My project will be the Ladybug Afghan. It is a panel afghan-the solid parts are all done. I’m not terribly skilled in color changes so I keep putting off finishing it.

Stephanie

45 Jenni February 7, 2006 at 1:00 pm

I have two projects to finish by the 26th.

A baptism dress for my baby girl, and the September 2005 birthday sweater for my sister!

46 Susan February 7, 2006 at 2:43 pm

I have a bag I’m in the middle of working on. It’s fairly far along but it’s just been sitting there, waiting for me to go back to it. Sooo… I think I’m in!

47 Glenda February 7, 2006 at 7:21 pm

I’m in. I’d like to finish my 3-scarf ruana from Sally Melvile’s book. Quick question: are we allowed to make center-pull balls from the hanks *before* the official start time? Because I have, like, 5 hanks to undo, and that may cut into my official UFOlympic time. ;)

48 Lisa February 8, 2006 at 1:10 pm

I’m in: I just signed up for the Team USA blog because I hadn’t found you yet. I am going to finish Samus and two pairs of felted clogs, which happen to be unfinished Xmas gifts from last year. This is far more challenging to me than starting something new.

49 Becky February 9, 2006 at 3:25 pm

I’d like to join. I’ll be finishing Jenna Adorno’s Hopeful – my first sweater! It got put on hold for Christmas knitting and never picked back up again due to all the Christmas goodies. I am also plan to finish my Jo Sharp Justine skirt – all the knitting is done, just need to block, seam, and put in elastic waistband. This is my oldest UFO and the first garment (it not hat, scarf, or blanket) I ever made. I hope they both fit!!
