June, the author of the DNA Scarf pattern emailed me and told me about a little error on the PDF version of the pattern:
Btw, I forgot to mention – if you and the others are going off of my
pdf chart, there’s an omission on rows 13 and 31 for the crossover
move – it’s put 2 st on cable needle, hold to back, knit 2, knit 2
from cn. I made the two different symbols for the same move and then
forgot to write one of them in the key. Whoops!
She also would like to collect photos of our finished scarves. She’s planning to publish them eventually!

Thanks for the info on the omission in the pattern.
I haven’t picked up my yarn yet but I really need to do that.
There was one other thing that threw me off on the chart. I’m used to reading the wrong side left to right, and having the symbols tell me what stitch I should be making (that is, what the stitch looks like on the WRONG side) On the DNA chart, however, the wrong side rows tell you what the stitch should look like on the RIGHT side. So, for example, | means knit ont he right side, but it means purl on the wrong side.
Addendum to my earlier post: apparetnly the version of the pattern from Interweave has instructions for how to read the chart. I got mine from Google, however, and it’s quite possible an early edition, which doesn’t specify how the chart is to be read.
I’m glad I’m not the only one thrown by the chart. If you follow it the way I’ve been taught, your cable is reverse stockinette. I ended up just reversing the two cable stitches and doing the rest of the chart as the stitches indicated. I’m really not feeling like frogging the whole thing (I’ve done 1.5 repeats) and what I did looks OK.
Also, this may be obvious to others, but the pattern directions ignore the selvage stitches. So when you actually knit the border you start w/ slip 1, knit 5 seed, 2 purl, etc.. and then end with 2 purl, 5 seed, knit 1. I was all confused about why I had extra stitches on my needles for a while. Frog frog frog.
