The garden has been started!

by Natalie on 2/11/2010

in Gardening

This year, I’m starting a lot of my garden from seed. The first thing to be planted was my onions.

Yeah, not much to look at yet! I planted 144 seeds. This variety is called “Copra” and it’s supposed to be a good storage onion. I didn’t have much luck storing my onions last year – it was really wet towards the end of the season, plus I don’t know what variety they were other than “yellow.” :) I’m hoping these will work out better!

I’ve never grown onions from seed before. My dad has always used sets (and that’s what I used last year). So this is a huge experiment all the way around!

A few of the seeds have already sprouted (2/10/2010 – 3 days after planting)! Tiny little white sprouts.

rosemary

Well, you can. But it’s supposedly not as easy as just propagating from a cutting from an already-established plant.

I didn’t know this.

Neither did my seed, apparently! It grew just fine. Granted not every seed germinated, but it’s done quite well with what did! I had to transplant it to a new pot. I’ve brought it inside for the winter, hopefully it continues to do well inside as it did outside.

It’s starting to look a little tree-like, isn’t it? I just may decorate it for Christmas. :)

Heirloom Seeds

by Natalie on 10/26/2009

in Gardening

My boss recently visited Monticello, and brought me back these heirloom seeds collected from the gardens there.

How cool is that?

I’ll have to collect seeds from all 3 of these to keep growing them in years to come.

Perennial Pea. This is a flowering plant, not a fruiting plant. It says it can grow up to 10 feet tall! I’ll have to get a trellis for this, and find a spot where it can grow grow grow.

‘Paris White’ Cos Lettuce. A “Cos” lettuce is like Romaine. It forms tall heads.

‘Tennis-Ball’ Lettuce. This one forms little heads around the size of a tennis ball. It’s an ancestor to the Boston or Bibb lettuces of today.

Carrots

We never had luck growing carrots in our garden when I was a kid. I only planted these because the kids wanted them. I didn’t think they’d grow. I didn’t think they’d taste good if they did grow.

I was wrong on both counts.

They grew.

They taste good!

106 carrots (ok, some of them are tiny and were composted because they were too small to deal with, but that only takes the count down to maybe 100).

I’m not sure if this is usual, or if Carrots officially need “curing,” but we noticed that these didn’t taste so great right after we picked them. But after the were cleaned and sat in the fridge overnight, they taste pretty close to store-bought! Emily even stole 3 handfuls of the ones I was chopping to freeze and ate them. That’s a sure sign that they taste good!

The fattest one was almost 2 inches wide.

Runnin’, runnin’, runnin’

by Natalie July 22, 2009 Gardening

My strawberry plants, which are everbearers or day neutral berries, and which aren’t supposed to generate (many) runners to reproduce, are runnin’ like crazy!

They’re also still producing strawberries (although slower than before, not that they were ever overbearing by any means!). However, after 3 months, some birds or other critter have been finding them and [...]

The last zucchini for a bit

by Natalie July 20, 2009 Gardening

Why will it be the last? Well my plants got a bad case of powdery mildew. I read that milk can be used to combat the mildew. So I first cut off all the affected leaves, and then gave the rest (the few that are left!) a spray with a 1:1 milk and water solution. [...]

Pepperpalooza

by Natalie July 18, 2009 Gardening

It was really windy last night, and these guys were starting to weigh down the plants. Plus we wanted to eat some for dinner, so it was the perfect time to do a pepper harvest!

I’m pretty happy with how big they’ve gotten. The little one I picked early because it had a bad spot (easily [...]

Why I love Folia!

by Natalie June 16, 2009 Gardening

I am so glad I found this site right before I started my garden this year.
I’ve mentioned it before, but didn’t really go into too much detail.
For the knitters and crocheters, yes, it is a bit like Ravelry. Instead of patterns and projects, there are gardens and plants. There’s a database (all user-entered, just like [...]

Climbing!

by Natalie June 10, 2009 Gardening

The peas are champion climbers. Since the previous photos, I have added more rungs to their ladder.

And since that photo only a couple of days ago, I’ve added 2 more! They’re starting to flower now. Yay peas!
